In short: Rohini began her journey in front of the camera at just five years old. Over 130 films later, she has evolved into a versatile powerhouse—not just as an actress across four languages, but as a screenwriter, dubbing artist, lyricist, and activist for social causes.

Born in Andhra Pradesh and raised in Chennai, Rohini’s entry into cinema was deeply influenced by her father, Appa Rao Naidu. While he harbored his own dreams of acting, he ultimately championed Rohini's path instead. This early start paid off; she made her debut as a child actress in the 1975 Telugu film Yasodha Krishna. Since then, she has built a prolific career primarily in Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu cinema, with occasional appearances in Kannada films. Her brother Balaji also pursued a career in acting. Her mother, Radha, was a housewife during her upbringing.

Her versatility is defined by her ability to inhabit different roles both on and off-screen. She is a distinguished dubbing artist who has voiced six characters across five Mani Ratnam films, providing voices for prominent actresses like Aishwarya Rai and Manisha Koirala. In addition to performing, her career expanded to include composing music—specifically lyrics for Maalai Pozhudhin Mayakathilaey (2012)—plus scriptwriting, involving a 2005 television adaptation of Verukku Neer, a novel honored by the Sahithya Academy Award. She has written for several Tamil TV serials since 1996. She even performed as an anchor and host for various television shows.

Rohini also uses her platform for advocacy and direction. She has directed short films for AIDS awareness and produced a 50-minute documentary in 2008, Silent Hues, which explores the lives of child actresses—a subject she knows intimately from her own beginnings. Her accolades reflect this range, including a National Film Award Special Mention and a Nandi Special Jury Award both for her performance in the 1995 film Stri. Her filmography includes about 130 South Indian productions. She received multiple awards in 2017 for her work in Guppy and Action Hero Biju.
