From courtroom to cinema: how a lawyer became an icon of Indian film
In short: Before he was a superstar, Mammootty was a practicing lawyer. After graduating from law school, he spent time in the courtroom before pursuing his true calling in acting. Today, he is a cultural titan in Malayalam cinema, having starred in about 400 films across a career spanning five decades.
Born in 1951 in what is now the Alappuzha district of Keralam, Mammootty’s path to stardom was unconventional. He earned an LL.B. from the Government Law College in Ernakulam and briefly practiced law in the Malappuram district. His transition to the screen began with an uncredited role in the 1971 film Anubhavangal Paalichakal. It took over a decade of supporting roles before he achieved his breakthrough in 1983, a pivotal year that saw him star in multiple commercially successful films, including the critically acclaimed Koodevide?.
Mammootty’s versatility is his hallmark. He is celebrated for his ability to embody complex, larger-than-life characters, ranging from historical figures to contemporary professionals. His performance as the legendary warrior Chandu Chekavar in the 1989 historical drama Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha earned him his first National Film Award for best actor. He later secured further National Film Awards for his roles in the 1994 film Vidheyan and his portrayal of B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, in the 1998 biopic Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar.
Alongside actor Mohanlal, Mammootty dominated the Malayalam film industry from the mid-1980s through the late 2000s. His influence extends beyond acting; he is a cultural icon in Keralam, affectionately known as Mammukka. His career has remained remarkably consistent, with recent performances in films like the 2018 Tamil drama Peranbu demonstrating his enduring artistic depth. Today, he is recognized not only as a bankable star but as a significant figure in Indian cinema, with his life and career even featured in the undergraduate history syllabus at Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam.
