In short: Before he was a household name, Joshiy was a college student who traded a degree for a seat in the back of a film set. He didn't just make movies; he pioneered the gritty aesthetics of action thrillers and noir in Malayalam cinema, eventually scaling his craft to national stardom.

Joshiy’s cinematic DNA was forged in the theaters of Varkala. As the sixth of nine children, he grew up in a family business where his father, Vasudevan, operated a cinema and hosted both film screenings and stage plays. This early immersion in the mechanics of storytelling provided a foundational education that Joshiy eventually prioritized over formal academics. Despite an offer to attend the Pune Film Institute, he chose the raw, immediate experience of the industry over a classroom.

His journey began in 1969 as a junior artist in the film Koottukudumbam, a role that allowed him to observe the craft from the inside. By age 20, he moved to Chennai to apprentice under legendary directors like M. Krishnan Nair and J. Sasikumar.

This period of rigorous apprenticeship culminated in his 1978 directorial debut, Tiger Salim, but it was the 1980 release of Moorkhan that established him as a pioneer of the action thriller and noir genres in Malayalam cinema. Joshiy’s reach expanded rapidly in the 1980s. He achieved national fame in 1984 with the Hindi film Dharm Aur Qanoon, starring Rajesh Khanna and Dharmendra, which grossed ₹6.5 crores. He became a prolific collaborator with major stars like Mammootty and Mohanlal, producing high-grossing hits such as New Delhi in 1988. His career is marked by a distinct ability to navigate multiple languages—directing in Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada—while maintaining a signature style that balances commercial appeal with genre-defining grit.
