The filmmaker who spanned the silent era and the digital age in one life.
In short: Manoel de Oliveira began his career in the silent film era and continued directing until his death at 106. While his early work faced censorship and indifference, he eventually became a global icon of cinema, producing at least one film every year well into his second century of life.
Born in Porto in 1908, Manoel de Oliveira was a unique figure in world cinema. His career trajectory was anything but linear; after debuting with the 1931 documentary Douro, faina fluvial, he spent decades balancing filmmaking with managing his family's industrial businesses. His 1942 feature debut, Aniki-bóbó, was a naturalistic portrait of children that struggled at the box office and drew the ire of the repressive Salazar regime, forcing him to pivot toward documentary shorts and agricultural management for years.
Oliveira’s international breakthrough arrived only in the late 20th century. Following the death of dictator António de Oliveira Salazar in 1970, he returned to narrative cinema with a series known as his tetralogy of frustrated love. These films, including O passado e o presente (1972) and Francisca (1981), showcased his signature style: rigid adherence to literary source texts, theatrical staging, and a profound focus on language. This period marked the beginning of his most prolific phase, where he directed with a relentless, prodigious pace.
By the 21st century, Oliveira was celebrated as the world's oldest active filmmaker. His later works, such as the 2001 drama Je rentre à la maison and the 2012 family drama O Gebo e a sombra, demonstrated a continued mastery of form. He remains the only filmmaker to have maintained an active career from the silent era through the digital age, leaving behind a legacy of meditative, self-reflexive cinema that bridged the gap between 19th-century literature and modern film techniques.
