In short: Before he became the architect of the Eurovision Song Contest, Marcel Bezençon was a trained art historian and theater critic. His career spanned decades of media leadership, culminating in a bold experiment that united a continent through music. Discover how a Swiss executive turned a local Italian concept into global television.

Born in 1907, Marcel Bezençon built a career defined by his deep engagement with culture and communication. After completing his formal studies in the history of art at the University of Lausanne in 1932, he initially pursued a path as a freelance critic covering the arts and theater. This background in aesthetic analysis eventually transitioned into a influential career in broadcasting management, where he would leave an indelible mark on the European media landscape.

Bezençon joined Radio suisse romande in 1939, eventually rising to become the director of that organization by 1950. His administrative influence expanded further when he took on the role of Director-General for the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation, a position he held until 1972. During this period, he also served as the director of the European Broadcasting Union from 1954 to 1970, a role that placed him at the center of international media coordination.

His most enduring legacy began in 1955, when he proposed the creation of the Eurovision Song Contest. Drawing inspiration from the established Sanremo Music Festival in Italy, Bezençon envisioned a collaborative broadcast that could bridge cultural divides across Europe. His foresight in creating this competition remains a cornerstone of international television history. Long after his death in 1981, his influence continues to be celebrated; in 2002, Christer Björkman and Richard Herrey established the Marcel Bezençon Awards to honor participants in the contest he helped bring to life.
