In short: Born in 1927, Mirtha Legrand transitioned from a teenage star of Argentina's golden age of cinema to an unparalleled broadcasting icon. With an active career spanning eight decades, she remains a fixture of Argentine television, hosting her signature interview programs with a format that has captivated audiences since 1968.

Born Rosa María Juana Martínez Suárez in Villa Cañás, Legrand emerged during the late 1930s as a prominent figure in the Argentine film industry. Her career began in earnest after a 1939 radio contest, leading to her leading role debut in the 1941 film Los martes, orquídeas. By the time she was 14, her agent, Roberto Cerebello, had coined the stage name Mirtha Legrand, a moniker derived from the French term for 'the great.' Over the next 25 years, she appeared in 36 films, including titles like 1943's Safo, historia de una pasión and 1960's La patota.

In 1945, while working on the film Cinco besos, she met director Daniel Tinayre, whom she married in 1946. Their partnership lasted until Tinayre's death in 1994, following a diagnosis of hepatitis B. The couple had two children, Daniel Andrés and Marcela, though the family faced significant tragedy when their son passed away from pancreatic cancer in 1999. Despite these personal losses, Legrand’s professional life continued to evolve, marking a transition from the silver screen to the television studio.

Legrand’s television career began in 1968 with the launch of Almorzando con las estrellas on Channel 9. The program, later retitled Almorzando con Mirtha Legrand, established a unique interview format that she continues to utilize today on her current show, La noche de Mirtha. As of 2026, Legrand maintains her status as an active host, a longevity that distinguishes her as potentially the most veteran television presenter in the world. Her trajectory from a child actress in the 1940s to a contemporary media powerhouse reflects the shifting landscape of Argentine entertainment across the 20th and 21st centuries.
