How a Japanese voice acting prodigy bridged the gap between Tokyo and Pennsylvania
In short: Miyuki Sawashiro is a titan of Japanese voice acting, known for her range across iconic anime and gaming roles. Beyond her prolific career, she is a rarity in the industry: a performer who has successfully voiced the same character in both original Japanese and English dubs.
Born on June 2, 1985, Miyuki Sawashiro launched her career after winning the Special Jury Prize at the Di Gi Charat auditions on May 2, 1999. Her early work included roles like Mint in Galaxy Angel and Puchiko in Di Gi Charat. Her versatility has since made her a staple in major franchises, voicing characters as diverse as Kurapika in Hunter x Hunter, Celty Sturluson in Durarara!!, and the Raiden Shogun in Genshin Impact.
Sawashiro’s commitment to her craft extends to her linguistic skills. During high school, she lived in Pennsylvania for a homestay program to study English. This dedication allowed her to become one of the few Japanese voice actors to reprise a role in English, specifically as Puchiko in the dubbed release of Leave it to Piyoko. While scheduling conflicts prevented her from doing the same for the Di Gi Charat television series, her bilingual capability remains a unique hallmark of her professional profile.
Her career has been marked by significant transitions and personal milestones. She was affiliated with Mausu Promotion from the start of her career until August 2015, when she moved to Aoni Production. In her personal life, she announced her marriage in 2014, and in 2018, fellow voice actress Mayumi Tanaka confirmed that Sawashiro had given birth to her first child. She continues to balance her demanding voiceover schedule with ongoing efforts to refine her English language proficiency.
