In short: Jeanne Bourgeois, known as Mistinguett, rose from a humble flower seller to become the world's highest-paid female entertainer. With a career spanning 60 years, she captivated international audiences through sheer magnetism, risqué routines, and a legendary stage presence that defined the glamour of the Parisian music hall era.

Born in 1873 in Enghien-les-Bains, Jeanne Bourgeois began her journey by selling flowers and working as a curtain-puller at the Casino de Paris. By the 1880s, she had adopted the stage name Mistinguett, a moniker inspired by her protruding front teeth. She eventually became a fixture at iconic venues like the Folies Bergère and the Moulin Rouge, where her flamboyant revues and signature songs, such as the 1920 hit 'Mon Homme,' made her a global sensation.

Mistinguett's life was as dramatic off-stage as it was on. She famously insured her legs for 500,000 Francs in 1919 and maintained a high-profile, decades-long connection with Maurice Chevalier. During World War I, her life took a turn into international espionage; she acted as a double agent to secure Chevalier's release from a German prisoner-of-war camp, even socializing with European royalty while smuggling intelligence back to France. Her espionage eventually led to a death sentence, which was only commuted through a prisoner exchange.

Despite lacking formal training in dance or a traditional singing voice, Mistinguett possessed a unique vitality that allowed her to perform well into her 70s. Even after enduring heart attacks and multiple surgeries, she continued to command the stage, most notably in 1938's 'Féerie de Paris,' where she appeared in a 7-foot tall headdress. She died in 1956 at age 82, leaving behind a legacy as a quintessential icon of French music hall culture who believed her true lovers were always the audiences in the gallery.
