How one voice actor dominated the 2023 anime dubbing landscape
In short: Emi Lo has become one of the most prolific voices in modern animation. While they once dreamed of film acting, they found a different kind of stardom through voice work, eventually appearing in more anime episodes in 2023 than any other individual performer in the industry.
Emi Lo is an American voice actor who has become a cornerstone of English anime dubbing. They are frequently cast in roles for younger female and male characters, bringing a distinct versatility to the medium. Notable roles in their filmography feature Maomao within The Apothecary Diaries, Lucyna "Lucy" Kushinada in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and Rinku Aimoto in D4DJ First Mix.
Lo's rise to prominence is marked by an extraordinary level of productivity. According to Crunchyroll News, 2023 was a landmark year for the actor; they appeared in 124 episodes across 28 different series for the company's English dub productions. This made them the most frequent performer in the industry that year, tying with Megan Shipman for the highest number of main roles, with five such credits.
The path to voice acting was not Lo's original intention. A former classical pianist, they initially sought a career in film. However, Lo faced systemic barriers, noting that they were told they "weren't pretty enough"—a critique they attribute to the limited and narrow representation of Asian women in cinema during their formative years. This experience redirected their passion for acting, video games, and animation toward the specialized field of voice acting, where they have since achieved significant recognition, including a 2026 nomination for Best Voice Artist Performance (English) at the 10th Crunchyroll Anime Awards for their work in The Apothecary Diaries.
Their influence extends across various genres, from the psychological tension of the Higurashi: When They Cry series to the action-heavy worlds of Cyberpunk and The Legend of Hei.
