In short: My Love from the Star blends historical records with high-concept fantasy. The series follows an extraterrestrial who landed in 1609 and spent four centuries on Earth, only to fall for a modern-day celebrity. It became a cultural phenomenon, sparking massive trends and redefining the reach of the Korean wave.

The series centers on Do Min-joon, an alien stranded on Earth after missing his return trip while saving a girl during the Joseon period. Possessing near-perfect human features and enhanced physical abilities, he has lived through four centuries by adopting new identities every decade. His life is upended when he becomes neighbors with Cheon Song-yi, a famous but haughty actress whose career is spiraling due to public scandal. As Min-joon prepares for his long-awaited departure, he finds himself drawn into Song-yi's chaotic life, eventually acting as her protector against a dangerous antagonist.

Writer Park Ji-eun drew inspiration from the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, specifically the Gwanghae Journal. This historical record documents sightings of unidentified flying objects, described as resembling washbowls or halos, across the Gangwon Province on August 25, 1609. By anchoring the narrative in these mysterious historical accounts, the show bridges the gap between ancient folklore and modern science fiction, creating a unique premise that captivated audiences during its 21-episode run between December 2013 and February 2014.

Technically, the production pushed boundaries in South Korean television. To capture the protagonist’s ability to stop time and teleport, the crew utilized 60 small cameras arranged in a 180-degree arc to create bullet-time effects. This was the first instance of high-definition cameras being employed for a television drama in the country. The show's impact extended far beyond its technical achievements, earning numerous accolades, including the Grand Prize at the 50th Baeksang Arts Awards, and cementing its status as a pivotal work in the global expansion of the Korean wave.

The series remains a masterclass in genre-blending, balancing romantic comedy with suspenseful thriller elements. While Min-joon attempts to maintain emotional distance to ensure his survival, his connection to Song-yi—who reminds him of the girl he saved centuries prior—forces him to confront his own humanity. The resulting narrative explores themes of identity, sacrifice, and the enduring nature of love across time, resonating deeply with viewers and critics alike.
