In short: For fourteen seasons, Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman used high-speed cameras, ballistic gelatin, and tons of explosives to test the validity of popular myths. By applying the scientific method to everything from movie stunts to internet rumors, they transformed curiosity into a global phenomenon that redefined science entertainment.

Created by Peter Rees in 2002 and premiering in 2003, MythBusters was built on a simple premise: rather than retelling tall tales, the show would test them. Hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, both special effects experts, operated out of M5 Industries in San Francisco. Their process typically involved a two-step approach: replicating the myth's original circumstances, and if that failed, pushing the parameters to the absolute limit. This commitment to extreme testing gave rise to their unofficial motto: If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing.

The show's production was as rigorous as its experiments. By the end of nine seasons, the team had performed 2,391 experiments and utilized 12 tons of explosives to investigate 769 myths. While the show often appeared to rely on small data sets due to television time constraints, the team frequently repeated experiments in various configurations. When viewers challenged their findings, the production team would occasionally revisit myths, sometimes overturning previous conclusions. This transparency was central to the show's credibility, even as they acknowledged the inherent difficulty in proving a negative.

The series evolved significantly over its 296-episode run. In the second season, the 'Build Team'—Kari Byron, Tory Belleci, and Grant Imahara—was introduced to investigate separate myths from a different workshop. This structure persisted until 2014, when budget cuts and contract disputes led to their departure. Savage and Hyneman continued as the sole hosts until the final season in 2016. Despite the show's conclusion, the franchise's influence remained, spawning spin-offs like MythBusters Jr. and Motor MythBusters, ensuring that the spirit of empirical investigation continued to reach new audiences long after the original series ended.
