Myrna Loy: The Hollywood Icon Who Never Received a Single Academy Award Nomination
In short: Known for her effortless wit and versatility, Myrna Loy was one of the most prolific and highest-paid stars of Hollywood's golden age. Despite a career spanning over 80 films and a reputation as a master of both comedy and drama, she remained famously overlooked by the Academy for decades.
Born Myrna Adele Williams in 1905, she spent her early years in Montana before moving to California. Her path to stardom was unconventional; she began as a dancer and was initially typecast in silent films as an exotic vamp or femme fatale, often portraying characters of Asian or Eurasian descent. It was not until her 1934 role as Nora Charles in The Thin Man that her true comedic range was revealed. Director W. S. Van Dyke famously tested her suitability for the part by pushing her into a swimming pool, impressed by her composed reaction.
Loy’s career flourished through the 1940s with hits like The Best Years of Our Lives and The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer. Beyond the screen, she was a dedicated activist, serving with the Red Cross during World War II and becoming the first Hollywood celebrity to join the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO. Her outspoken political views, including her fierce opposition to Adolf Hitler, even led to her name appearing on a Nazi blacklist.
Despite her immense popularity—she was listed among the top ten money-making stars in 1937 and 1938—the Academy consistently ignored her performances. It was only after an extensive lobbying campaign led by screenwriter Michael Russnow that she was finally recognized with an Honorary Academy Award in 1991. Loy, who died in 1993 at age 88, accepted the honor via camera from her New York home, marking her final public appearance.
