The voice actress who broke a 40-year Japanese music industry record
In short: Before she was a chart-topping pop star, she was a child trainee in the traditional art of enka. Nana Mizuki didn't just cross genres; she shattered a ceiling that had remained intact since 1968, proving that voice acting could command the highest peaks of the music world.
Born Nana Kondō in 1980, the artist's musical foundations were laid much earlier than her pop stardom. She began training in enka, a traditional Japanese genre, at just five years old. While she released a single under her birth name in 1993, her path shifted toward voice acting after passing an audition for the game *Noël: La Neige*, leading to her professional debut in 1997.
Her ascent to the top of the Oricon charts represents a historic milestone in Japanese media. In 2009, her album *Ultimate Diamond* reached number one, and in 2010, her single "Phantom Minds" achieved the same feat. In doing so, she became the first voice actress to top both the weekly Oricon albums and singles charts since the charts' inception in 1968.
This success is built on a versatile career spanning animation, live performance, and even stage acting. She is widely recognized for voicing iconic characters like Hinata Hyūga in *Naruto* and Tsubomi Hanasaki in *Heartcatch Precure!*. Beyond the recording booth, she has performed at Japan's largest concert hall, the Tokyo Dome, and even made her stage debut as Carole King in a production of *Beautiful: The Carole King Musical* in 2017.
Mizuki's influence extends to cultural ambassadorship and international touring. Named the first tourism ambassador for her hometown of Niihama, Ehime, she has also taken her music to Singapore, Taiwan, and China. Her career remains a testament to the expanding boundaries of the 'seiyu' (voice actor) profession.
