How a high school marching band chant became a global television catchphrase
In short: Nancy Cartwright auditioned for the role of Lisa Simpson, but a devious, school-hating brother caught her eye instead. She improvised the iconic line Eat My Shorts based on a real chant from her high school days, inadvertently creating one of the most recognizable catchphrases in the history of television.
Born in Dayton, Ohio, in 1957, Nancy Cartwright discovered her talent for voices early, winning speech competitions before moving to Hollywood in 1978. Mentored by legendary voice actor Daws Butler, she honed her craft by mailing tape recordings back and forth for critique. Her professional breakthrough arrived in 1987 when she auditioned for a series of animated shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show. Though she initially intended to read for Lisa Simpson, she found the character of Bart more compelling and secured the role on the spot.
Bart Simpson quickly became a cultural phenomenon, leading to the era of Bartmania in the early 1990s. Despite the character's massive success, Cartwright remained largely anonymous during the show's first season, as Fox initially prohibited her from giving interviews to keep the fact that a woman voiced the boy secret. Her performance was so convincing that she rarely encountered recognition in public, a situation she described as the best acting job in the world. Her work eventually earned her a Primetime Emmy Award in 1992 and an Annie Award in 1995.
Beyond her work on The Simpsons, Cartwright has voiced numerous characters, including Chuckie Finster in Rugrats and Rufus in Kim Possible. She has also pursued diverse creative projects, including writing an autobiography, producing a film about Federico Fellini, and engaging in philanthropy. Throughout her career, she has navigated complex contract negotiations, including a 1998 dispute where Fox threatened to replace the entire cast. Today, she remains a prolific figure in animation, having built a career that spans decades of iconic roles and behind-the-scenes influence.
