The actor who once overshadowed one of India's greatest legends
In short: In the high-stakes world of Hindi cinema, Om Prakash was a character actor of such immense depth that he once terrified a superstar. Dilip Kumar, one of the industry's most revered icons, admitted that Prakash's performance in the film Gopi was so powerful it eclipsed his own.
Born in Lahore in 1919, Om Prakash Chibber built a career spanning over forty years in the Indian film industry. His journey began in the world of radio, where he became a popular personality in Punjab under the name 'Fateh Din' while earning a modest monthly salary of Rs 25. His transition to the silver screen was sparked by a chance encounter at a wedding, where filmmaker Dalsukh Pancholi offered him a role in the film Daasi for just Rs 80. This small break launched a prolific career that eventually saw him appear in 307 films.
Prakash was celebrated for his versatility, moving seamlessly between comedy and heavy drama. He was a staple in the works of legendary actors like Raj Kapoor, Kishore Kumar, and Dev Anand. However, his ability to portray mature, complex roles with 'depth' earned him a unique standing among his peers. His performance in the 1970 film Gopi is particularly noted; it was so compelling that Dilip Kumar famously confessed he was 'only afraid once' in his career because Prakash's presence was so commanding.
Beyond his acting, Prakash was a man of diverse artistic interests. He began classical music lessons at age twelve and performed in traditional Ramlila plays as Sita. He also ventured into the business side of cinema, producing notable titles such as Sanjog (1961) and Gateway of India (1957). He won his first major acting award for the film Dus Lakh in 1966, cementing his legacy as a cornerstone of Hindi cinema until his passing in 1998.
