In short: Born to West African immigrant parents in a French social housing project, Omar Sy rose from local radio comedy to international stardom. As the first Black recipient of the César Award for Best Actor, he has redefined French cinema and successfully transitioned into major Hollywood blockbusters and global streaming hits.

Omar Sy was born on January 20, 1978, in Trappes, France, the fourth of eight children. His father, Demba, moved from Senegal to France in 1962 to work in an auto parts factory, while his mother, Diaratou, worked as a house cleaner. Raised in a habitation à loyer modéré, Sy maintained strong ties to his heritage, speaking Pulaar at home and visiting Senegal every other summer. His early life in Trappes connected him with future stars like Jamel Debbouze and Nicolas Anelka, setting the stage for his entry into the entertainment industry.

Sy’s career began in 1996 at Radio Nova, where he formed a long-standing comedy partnership with Fred Testot. The duo gained significant popularity in France through their television show, Service après-vente des émissions, which aired on Canal+ from 2005 to 2012. However, it was the 2011 comedy-drama The Intouchables that catapulted him to international fame. The film became the most successful French production in history, selling over 19 million tickets in its home country. This performance earned him the 2012 César Award for Best Actor, marking a historic milestone as the first Black actor to receive the honor.

Following this success, Sy relocated to Los Angeles in 2012, where he diligently worked to master English. His career expanded into massive global franchises, including roles in X-Men: Days of Future Past and Jurassic World. In 2021, he achieved further acclaim as the lead in the Netflix series Lupin, which became one of the platform's most-watched non-English programs. Beyond acting, Sy has become a prominent cultural figure, recognized on the Time 100 list and serving as an official representative for the 2026 Summer Youth Olympics in Dakar. He continues to exert influence through production deals with major streaming services and his recent co-ownership of the Paris Basketball club.
