In short: Jackie Chan directed and starred in Police Story, a landmark 1985 film that prioritized dangerous, large-scale stunts over traditional scripts. By building the narrative around a series of elaborate action sequences, Chan created a visceral experience that remains a benchmark for stunt choreography and physical comedy in global cinema history.

Following a disappointing experience on The Protector, Jackie Chan sought to create a film that showcased his unique vision. Rather than following standard Hollywood screenwriting conventions, Chan instructed screenwriter Edward Tang to structure the movie around a specific list of props and locations, such as a shopping mall and a double-decker bus. This approach allowed the action to dictate the film's progression, resulting in sequences that were both narratively driven and technically ambitious.

The film's climactic shopping mall fight earned it the nickname Glass Story among the crew due to the massive amount of sugar glass shattered during production. The final stunt, in which Chan slides down a pole covered in exploding electric lights, resulted in second-degree burns to his hands, a dislocated pelvis, and a back injury. Despite the intense physical toll and strict time constraints—the mall had to be ready for business the following morning—the sequence is now considered one of the greatest stunts in cinema history.

While initial Western reviews were mixed, often focusing on the slapstick humor or comparing Chan to American stars like Sylvester Stallone, the film's reputation grew significantly over time. By 2016, a Time Out poll of critics and filmmakers ranked it as the fifth-best action movie of all time. Today, it is celebrated for its blend of physical comedy and high-stakes choreography, cementing Chan's status as a master showman who risked life and limb to capture the perfect shot.
