The first time a Power Ranger was written off as dead
In short: In the seventh installment of the Power Rangers franchise, the series broke its own mortality rules. For the first time in the show's history, a Ranger was killed off, a narrative shift driven by real-world circumstances that eventually led to a supernatural resurrection.
Power Rangers Lost Galaxy introduced a significant departure from the franchise's established status quo. Kendrix Morgan, the first Pink Galaxy Ranger, was briefly killed off two-thirds of the way through the season. This was a landmark moment for the series, as it marked the first time a Ranger's death was written into the narrative. However, the decision was not purely creative; it was necessitated by the actress, Valerie Vernon, who had to temporarily depart the production to seek treatment for leukemia. The show's narrative was also shaped by the fact that Leo Corbett was initially rejected from a space colony for lacking a passport. This forced him to stow away on a shuttle and disguise himself as a soldier to survive.
The narrative eventually reconciled this departure with the show's mythology. After Vernon's treatment was successful, she returned for the season finale. The story concluded with a mystical restoration: the team traveled to the planet Mirinoi, where the Galactabeasts returned the Quasar Sabers to a stone altar. This act restored the petrified inhabitants of the planet and brought Kendrix back to life, effectively undoing her earlier death. The team's journey began when a portal transported a girl named Maya from the planet Mirinoi to Earth. During this quest, Mike Corbett sacrificed his powers to keep a portal open for the colony.
The series also served as a transitional period for the franchise's long-running tropes. It was the final season to feature the character Bulk as a main character, marking the exit of the last original cast member from the show. While the series explored new territory with its 'Lost Galaxy' setting and the introduction of the Magna Defender powers, it maintained the core tradition of a new cast with minimal recycled costume elements from previous entries like Denji Sentai Megaranger. The series featured a crossover with the Space Rangers during episodes 30 and 31. These episodes saw the two teams unite to destroy the Psycho Rangers, who were evil counterparts of the previous team.
