A German prince who became a Dutch war hero, then a global scandal figure.
In short: Born into German nobility, Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld transformed from a wartime commander of Dutch forces into a central figure of international diplomacy. Yet, his legacy remains complex, marked by his pivotal role in founding the Bilderberg Conference and the World Wildlife Fund, alongside a devastating, career-ending bribery scandal.
Born in 1911 in Jena, Germany, Bernhard was the son of Prince Bernhard Casimir and a nephew of Leopold IV, the final sovereign of Lippe-Biesterfeld. His early life was defined by his German heritage and legal studies in Lausanne, Munich, and Berlin. During the 1930s, he worked for the chemical giant IG Farben in Paris, where he met Crown Princess Juliana of the Netherlands. They married in 1937, and he subsequently adopted Dutch citizenship, firmly opposing the German invasion of his new homeland.
When war broke out, Bernhard fled to England with his family in May 1940. He quickly returned to lead Dutch troops, eventually commanding the Netherlands Forces of the Interior by 1944. His wartime service included acting as a liaison to British forces and flying missions with the Royal Air Force. Following the 1945 liberation, he transitioned into a high-profile diplomatic role, promoting Dutch trade and culture while initiating the influential Bilderberg Conference in 1954 and co-founding the World Wildlife Fund in 1961.
Despite these achievements, his public standing collapsed in 1976. A special Dutch commission confirmed he had accepted substantial payments from the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation to influence Dutch military procurement. This bribery scandal triggered a constitutional crisis, forcing him to resign from his various leadership positions and stripping him of his military functions. He spent his remaining years active in conservation efforts until his death in 2004, leaving behind a legacy that oscillates between wartime bravery and political disgrace.
