How Rajeev Ram Became the Oldest First-Time World Number One in Doubles Tennis
In short: Rajeev Ram transformed from a promising junior talent into a dominant force in professional tennis. After retiring from singles in 2017, he focused on doubles, eventually securing six major titles and the world number one ranking. His journey reflects a rare, persistent evolution in the high-stakes world of professional sport.
Born in Denver in 1984, Rajeev Ram’s path to tennis prominence began with a successful junior career, including nine national titles. He briefly attended the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign, where he helped the team win the 2003 NCAA championship before turning his focus to the professional circuit. Early in his career, he balanced singles and doubles, even achieving the rare feat of winning four professional-level matches in a single day at the 2009 Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.
Ram’s transition to a doubles specialist defined his later career. Partnering with Joe Salisbury, he achieved remarkable consistency, winning three consecutive US Open titles between 2021 and 2023. His success extended to mixed doubles, where he claimed two Australian Open titles alongside Barbora Krejčíková and earned Olympic silver medals in 2016 and 2024. These achievements culminated in October 2022, when he became the oldest first-time world number one in the history of the ATP doubles rankings.
Beyond his titles, Ram’s career is marked by his longevity and adaptability. He qualified for the ATP Finals six times, winning back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023. His ability to navigate the pressures of the tour, from early Challenger-level wins to major championships, underscores a career built on sustained performance. As the 18th American to reach the top of the doubles rankings, Ram remains a significant figure in the sport's modern era.
