In short: Born Raffaella Pelloni, the legendary performer Raffaella Carrà became a global pop culture icon across Europe and Latin America. Her stage name was a deliberate invention by a director who fused her first name with the surname of a famous Italian painter to craft a lasting, artistic brand.

Raffaella Carrà was born in Bologna in 1943. Her path to stardom began early; she studied at the National Academy of Dance in Rome at age eight and later graduated from the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in 1960. While she initially pursued acting, appearing in Italian peplum films and even signing a contract with 20th Century Fox in 1965, her true cultural impact emerged through music and television. In the mid-1960s, director Dante Guardamagna gave her the pseudonym Carrà, drawing inspiration from the Renaissance master Raphael Sanzio and the modernist painter Carlo Carrà.

By the 1970s and 1980s, Carrà had transcended traditional entertainment to become a pioneer of feminism, as well as a fashion, music, and LGBT icon. Her influence was immense, with over 60 million records sold worldwide. She was a master of international collaboration, hosting shows that bridged borders, such as the 1981 series Millemilioni, which filmed in capitals ranging from Mexico City to Moscow. Her midday programme, Pronto, Raffaella?, was a massive success, drawing over 14 million viewers for a single interview with Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

Despite her success, Carrà’s career was often marked by high-profile controversies. In 1984, her contract renewal with the Italian broadcaster RAI sparked a heated debate in the national parliament, with Prime Minister Bettino Craxi labeling her earnings scandalous. Later, in 1985, her decision to broadcast episodes of Buonasera Raffaella via satellite from New York drew criticism over production costs. Yet, her ability to command global attention remained undeniable, leading to appearances on major American talk shows hosted by Johnny Carson and David Letterman, cementing her status as a singular force in show business until her death in 2021.
