From synth-rock medicine to the silver screen and back
In short: Renn Hawkey’s career is a masterclass in creative pivots. He transitioned from a synth-rock musician who performed in medical scrubs to a film producer and actor, before returning to the stage in a new gothic rock project with his wife, actress Vera Farmiga.
Hawkey first gained prominence as a member of the rock band Deadsy, a group defined by a fusion of glam, goth, and synth-rock. His role was highly conceptual: he represented the color yellow and the entities of science and medicine, which dictated his stage persona of wearing medical scrubs. The band gained significant attention in 1999, performing at The Viper Room for notable figures from bands like Limp Bizkit and Thirty Seconds to Mars. This era saw Hawkey contributing to the albums Commencement (2002) and Phantasmagore (2006), the latter of which marked his final appearance with the group.
Following a hiatus from the music industry where he spent time working in carpentry, Hawkey pivoted toward film and television. He served as the musical director and producer for Vera Farmiga's directorial debut, Higher Ground (2011), and later executive produced the 2017 documentary Unspoken. His transition into acting was marked by a recurring role in the A&E series The Returned (2015), where he portrayed Paul Koretsky, a father navigating the aftermath of a tragic accident.
In 2024, Hawkey’s career came full circle as he joined the alternative and gothic rock band The Yagas alongside Farmiga. This move represents a synthesis of his musical roots and his personal life, as he also produced the band's debut album, Midnight Minuet (2025). His trajectory highlights a non-linear path of artistic evolution, moving between the technical demands of production, the performance of rock music, and the narrative structure of film.
