Renate Reinsve was ready to quit acting for carpentry before her global breakthrough role.
In short: Before becoming an internationally acclaimed actress, Renate Reinsve nearly abandoned her career to pursue carpentry. A single role written specifically for her by director Joachim Trier changed everything, launching her from a Norwegian stage performer to an Academy Award nominee who now commands the screen in global cinema.
Born in 1987 in Solbergelva, Norway, Reinsve began her professional journey at the Trøndelag Teater and later joined Det Norske Teatret in 2016. Her early years were marked by a restless spirit; after being expelled from school at 16, she moved to Edinburgh, where she worked in a hostel bar. Her path to acting was not linear, as she also spent time working at her family's hardware store before being dismissed. She has noted that living with ADHD as a child allowed her to hyperfocus on theater during her teenage years, a trait that has defined her intense approach to performance.
Her career reached a pivotal turning point in 2021. While considering a career change into carpentry, she was offered the lead role of Julie in Joachim Trier's The Worst Person in the World. The part was crafted with her in mind, and the film's success at the Cannes Film Festival earned her the Best Actress award. This performance established her as a major talent, drawing comparisons to stars like Alicia Vikander and Lily James for her mature, sensitive, and sympathetic portrayal of complex characters.
Since her breakthrough, Reinsve has maintained a prolific pace, appearing in diverse projects ranging from the legal thriller Presumed Innocent to the science-fiction romance Another End. Her collaboration with Trier continued with the 2025 family drama Sentimental Value, which earned her nominations for an Academy Award, a BAFTA, and a Golden Globe. In 2026, her work in the film Fjord, directed by Cristian Mungiu, saw the project win the Palme d'Or at Cannes. Beyond her professional life, Reinsve is a mother to a son with animator Julian Nazario Vargas, and she continues to seek out roles that challenge her range, including an upcoming portrayal of Mary Wollstonecraft.
