The video game that let Tony Montana survive his own ending
In short: In the 1983 film Scarface, Tony Montana meets a definitive, violent end. But in the 2006 video game sequel, the narrative fractures. Players take control of a survivor, tasked with rebuilding a shattered drug empire from the ashes of a cinematic tragedy.
Scarface: The World Is Yours (2006) functions as a broad-strokes sequel to the Brian De Palma film. While the movie ends in tragedy, the game reimagines the finale: Tony Montana survives the assault on his mansion and escapes the authorities. Hiding in the Miami glades, he vows revenge against Alejandro Sosa, who seized his assets. The gameplay begins three months later in March 1984, with Tony starting from scratch, forced to re-purchase his own mansion and navigate a city where his former territories have been divided among rival cartels.
The game employs a 'Grand Theft Auto' style open-world mechanic with a specific moral constraint: as Tony, the player cannot kill innocent civilians. This reflects the character's cinematic refusal to harm non-combatants. However, as the player recruits specialized associates—such as an enforcer or a hitman—they gain the ability to switch characters and engage in more lethal behavior. The game also features a unique 'Balls' meter; by performing manual aims, winning races, or taunting enemies, players build 'Balls' to unlock 'Blind Rage,' a first-person slow-motion mode with infinite ammo.
Economic and social systems drive the progression. Players must manage 'dirty money' (cash), which is lost upon death or arrest unless laundered at a bank. The laundering fee fluctuates based on 'cop heat,' while 'gang heat' influences the price of cocaine. To conquer the four regions of Miami—Little Havana, Downtown, South Beach, and North Beach—players must purchase 'fronts,' eliminate rivals, and manage drug runs. The game even features a 'Reputation' system, where reaching specific levels (represented by the letters in 'Scarface') unlocks new items, missions, and 'femme fatales' who provide stat boosts like increased stamina.
