How a 1979 cult classic became a 2005 brawling epic
In short: Before the events of the iconic film, a street gang had to fight their way across New York City. Rockstar's adaptation of The Warriors expands a cinematic masterpiece into a gritty, 3D survival experience, adding months of untold history and much more mayhem to the streets of Coney Island.
Released in October 2005 for PlayStation 2 and Xbox, the video game serves as a prequel to the 1979 film. While the movie begins with a citywide gang meeting, the game explores the three months of chaos leading up to that moment. Players navigate a 3D New York City, moving from the Warriors' home turf in Coney Island through territories held by rivals like the Baseball Furies in Riverside Park and the Hi-Hats in Manhattan.
The gameplay is a heavy-hitting beat 'em up centered on melee combat and gang warfare. Players can control characters like the Warchief Cleon or the second-in-command Swan, utilizing combos, grabs, and even a 'rage meter' to achieve temporary invincibility. Beyond simple brawling, the game incorporates survival elements: players can use spray paint to mark territory, mug civilians for money, or even train at their headquarters to increase physical stamina through exercises like chin-ups and heavy bag work.
The narrative depth is significant, featuring five 'flashback' missions that detail how various members joined the gang. It also introduces expanded lore, such as the Warriors' conflict with the Destroyers and their interactions with the all-female Lizzies. However, the transition to later consoles saw some changes; while the game was re-released for PlayStation 3 and 4, certain licensed tracks from the original film's soundtrack, such as 'I Love Livin' in the City', were removed due to licensing restrictions.
