The world's oldest wooden sculpture is 12,500 years old and challenges our history
In short: Found in a Russian peat bog, the Shigir Idol is a nine-foot-tall totem pole that predates Stonehenge by over 7,000 years. Its existence forces a rethink of human history, proving that ancient hunter-gatherers possessed complex symbolic behaviors and artistic traditions long before the rise of early agrarian societies.
Discovered by gold prospectors in 1890 at the bottom of a peat bog in the Ural mountains, the Shigir Idol is the oldest known surviving work of wooden ritual art. The sculpture is composed of ten fragments carved from a single larch tree, which contained 159 growth rings. While initial carbon dating in 1997 suggested an age of 9,500 years, modern analysis using accelerator mass spectrometry has pushed its origin back to approximately 12,500 years ago, placing its creation at the end of the Last Ice Age.
For decades, the scientific community struggled to accept that hunter-gatherer communities in the Urals could produce such sophisticated art. Prevailing narratives of human evolution were heavily Western-centric, often dismissing hunter-gatherers as inferior to the agrarian societies of the Fertile Crescent. The idol’s complex geometric patterns and eight carved faces suggest it served as a form of portable, ritualistic 'mobiliary art,' potentially documenting creation myths or cosmological boundaries between the earth and sky.
The survival of this artifact is largely due to the unique, acidic, and antimicrobial conditions of the peat bog, which prevented the wood from decaying. Scholar João Zilhão notes that the idol serves as a critical reminder that a lack of archaeological evidence does not equate to a lack of ancient innovation. Much of human history, particularly art created from perishable materials, has simply vanished, leading to long-standing, incorrect myths about the creative limitations of our ancestors.
