How a pilot’s passion project became a Hollywood titan worth billions
In short: Founded by an aviation enthusiast in 2006, Skydance evolved from a niche film financier into a massive media powerhouse. After years of successful partnerships and franchise hits, the studio orchestrated a landmark 2025 merger with Paramount Global, setting its sights on further expansion through a massive acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.
David Ellison, a pilot whose interest in aviation inspired the company’s name, launched Skydance Productions in 2006. Initially, the firm operated as a financing vehicle for individual projects, such as the World War I drama Flyboys. The studio gained significant momentum in 2010 after securing $350 million in funding, bolstered by support from Larry Ellison, the founder of Oracle.
A pivotal moment arrived in 2010 with the release of True Grit. Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, the western was a major commercial hit, earning over a quarter-billion dollars globally against production costs under $40 million. This success solidified Skydance’s reputation, leading to a string of high-profile hits including Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and World War Z. By 2013, the company had expanded into television, later securing major agreements with streaming platforms like Amazon and Apple.
The studio’s ambitions grew to include gaming and animation, the latter led by former Pixar executive John Lasseter. In 2025, Skydance reached a new level of scale by merging with Paramount Global in an $8 billion deal. This consolidation combined Skydance’s diverse portfolio—spanning film, television, and animation—with Paramount’s vast library and assets. By early 2026, the newly formed Paramount Skydance moved to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery for approximately $81 billion, a transaction that received shareholder approval by April 2026.
Today, Paramount Skydance operates as a major force in communication services, led by David Ellison as CEO and chair. The company continues to produce high-budget genre series and blockbuster films, leveraging its integrated divisions to navigate the shifting landscape of modern entertainment. With its recent aggressive expansion, the organization remains a central player in the ongoing consolidation of the global media industry.
