In short: The Super Sentai series, a Japanese cultural juggernaut, has shaped the tokusatsu genre since 1975. Featuring color-coded teams, elaborate transformations, and giant mecha battles, the franchise became a global phenomenon. Following its 49th season, the series entered a hiatus in 2026, marking a major shift in Japanese television history.

The Super Sentai Series, produced by Toei Company, is a cornerstone of Japanese tokusatsu, a genre defined by live-action performances and vibrant special effects. Each series follows a team of heroes who utilize specialized devices to transform, gaining unique uniforms and fighting skills to combat otherworldly threats. A signature element of the franchise is the roll call, a dramatic naming sequence inspired by the 1862 kabuki play Shiranami Gonin Otoko and introduced to the series by stunt coordinator Kazutoshi Takahashi.

The franchise's origins are rooted in the work of creator Shotaro Ishinomori, who developed the first two series, Himitsu Sentai Gorenger and J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai, in the late 1970s. The series evolved significantly through collaborations, most notably with Marvel Comics. This partnership introduced the concept of giant robots to tokusatsu, a feature that became a staple of the franchise. While early guidebooks often included unrelated shows, the franchise was officially rebranded in 2000 during the airing of Mirai Sentai Timeranger, which formally classified the Ishinomori-era shows under the Super Sentai banner.

In November 2025, TV Asahi announced that the franchise would enter a hiatus following the conclusion of its 49th season, No.1 Sentai Gozyuger. In February 2026, a new tokusatsu franchise, Project R.E.D., replaced it in the Super Hero Time programming block. While Toei Head of Production Shin-ichiro Shirakura noted there are no immediate plans for a revival, he stated that a future return remains a possibility. Despite the hiatus, the franchise's legacy persists through its influence on global media, including the North American Power Rangers series, and its continued presence in Japanese pop culture through spin-offs and memorial projects.
