The 1975 television series that birthed the entire Super Sentai franchise
In short: Before the modern era of cinematic universes, there was a secret squad of five. Emerging from a Japanese snack shop in 1975, Himitsu Sentai Gorenger established the blueprint for a global phenomenon, blending high-tech battlesuits with a desperate struggle against a world-ending terrorist organization.
Airing from April 5, 1975, to March 26, 1977, Himitsu Sentai Gorenger served as the foundational installment of the Super Sentai franchise. The narrative follows the Earth Guard League, known as EAGLE, as they defend world peace against the Black Cross Army. This terrorist group, led by the enigmatic Black Cross Führer, utilizes advanced technology and magic to deploy superhuman operatives and brainwashed, leather-suited foot soldiers called Zolders to achieve global domination.
The team is composed of five specialists recruited from various EAGLE branches. The squad is led by the 24-year-old Tsuyoshi Kaijo, known as Akarenger, a combat strategist who wields the multipurpose Red Vute. He is joined by the 25-year-old marksman Akira Shinmei (Aorenger), the physically powerful engineering recruit Daita Oiwa (Kirenger), the 18-year-old explosives expert Peggy Matsuyama (Momorenger), and the 17-year-old Kenji Asuka (Midorenger). Their secret base is hidden beneath the 'Gon' snack shop, commanded by Gonpachi Edogawa.
The conflict reaches cosmic proportions as the Black Cross Army's leadership includes powerful entities like the sorcerer Golden Mask and the volcanic General Magman. The series' stakes culminate in the revelation that the Black Cross Führer is actually a sentient alien AI controlling the orbiting Black Cross Castle. This high-concept struggle between human resistance and extraterrestrial intelligence defined the tokusatsu genre, leaving a legacy that continues through decades of sequels and international adaptations.
