In short: Science fiction promised us instant travel, but reality is far more subtle. Quantum teleportation does not move matter; it transfers information between linked particles. While you will not be stepping into a transporter, this phenomenon is the foundation for a future quantum internet and revolutionary new computing power.

The concept of teleportation has long captivated the public, largely thanks to Star Trek. Debuting sixty years ago, the show’s transporter was a narrative device designed to save production costs on ship landings. It depicted matter being converted into energy, transmitted, and reconstructed atom by atom. While earlier fiction like Edward Page Mitchell’s 1877 story The Man Without a Body explored similar ideas, Star Trek solidified the trope in the cultural imagination.

In the real world, physicists have achieved something different: quantum teleportation. First proposed in 1993 by Bennett et al., this process relies on quantum entanglement, where particles become linked across infinite distances. Unlike the fiction of matter-beaming, quantum teleportation transfers only the quantum state—information like an electron’s energy level or a photon’s polarization—without moving any physical matter. Because measuring a quantum state alters it, researchers cannot clone information; instead, they use entanglement to project that state onto a distant particle.

This process requires a classical communication channel to complete the transfer. As researcher Daniel Oblak explains, the sender must transmit classical data to the receiver, providing instructions on how to interpret the quantum information. This technique has been experimentally verified since the late 1990s, with Chinese scientists successfully demonstrating it to and from low Earth orbit in 2017. While it will not transport humans, it is essential for building a quantum internet and solving complex problems that remain beyond the reach of classical computers.
