Before he was Kojak, Telly Savalas was a radio producer, psychologist, and lifeguard.
In short: Telly Savalas is best remembered as the bald, lollipop-sucking detective Lt. Theo Kojak. Yet, his life was defined by far more than a single television role. From his early days as a radio executive to his success as a world-class poker player, Savalas lived a life of remarkable, multifaceted achievement.
Born in 1922 to Greek parents in New York, Savalas initially spoke only Greek before learning English. His early life was marked by tragedy and service; after a failed rescue attempt as a lifeguard, he became a lifelong advocate for water safety. He served in the U.S. Army during the 1940s, later earning a degree in psychology from Columbia University. Before acting, he built a career in media, directing early news programs and giving Howard Cosell his first television job.
Savalas did not pursue acting until his late thirties, when he stepped in for a friend at an audition. His breakthrough came in 1962 with Birdman of Alcatraz, earning him Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations. He became a prolific character actor, appearing in films like The Dirty Dozen and On Her Majesty's Secret Service. He famously shaved his head for the role of Pontius Pilate in 1965, a look he maintained for the rest of his life.
The 1973 debut of Kojak transformed him into an international icon. The show, which aired for five seasons, was noted for its focus on civic issues and its unique, street-wise protagonist. Beyond the screen, Savalas was a chart-topping singer in the UK, a competitive poker player who placed 21st in the 1992 World Series of Poker, and a dedicated philanthropist who supported his ancestral Greek roots. He passed away in 1994, leaving behind a legacy that spanned television, film, music, and high-stakes gaming.
