In short: Long before Ted Danson became a household name as Sam Malone on Cheers, he was an 11-year-old activist in Arizona. Armed with saws and axes, he and his friends targeted highway billboards they deemed an ugly blight, marking the start of a lifelong commitment to environmental conservation and advocacy.

Born in San Diego in 1947, Danson was raised in Flagstaff, Arizona, where his father served as an anthropology professor and museum director. His early sensitivity to environmental issues eventually led him to pursue a career in drama, graduating with a bachelor of fine arts from Carnegie Mellon University in 1972. After moving to Los Angeles in 1978, he spent years refining his craft at the Actor’s Institute and taking minor roles in television and film.

Danson’s breakout came in 1982 with the role of Sam Malone, the carousing bartender on the hit comedy Cheers. The series, which ran for 11 seasons, became a cultural phenomenon, eventually drawing 26 million viewers per week. Despite his massive success, Danson remained focused on his environmental interests. In 1984, he partnered with lawyer Robert Sulnick to block oil drilling near Santa Monica, a collaboration that led to the 1987 founding of the American Oceans Campaign. This organization later merged with Oceana in 2002, and Danson remains a prominent advocate for ocean conservation.

Beyond his activism, Danson has maintained a prolific acting career, earning multiple Emmy and Golden Globe awards. His post-Cheers work includes diverse roles in series such as Becker, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and the critically acclaimed The Good Place. Whether portraying a misanthropic doctor or the architect of an afterlife neighborhood, Danson has consistently demonstrated range, while his personal life has remained anchored by his 1995 marriage to actress Mary Steenburgen, with whom he has frequently collaborated on screen.
