Rescuing a masterpiece from the weight of its own frame
In short: Watch how a darkened varnish and a heavy wood mount threaten to destroy a delicate paper artwork. This restoration process demonstrates the precise balance between modern technology and traditional craftsmanship.
The restoration of 'The Assassination of Archimedes' involves a multi-stage intervention to stabilize the piece for future generations. Specialists first address a darkened varnish before performing the delicate task of removing the artwork from its original wood panel.
To protect the thin paper, restorers use routers, hand planes, and scalpels to painstakingly strip away the wood. The final goal is to transition the piece to archival mounting on acid-free board using reversible materials, ensuring the work remains stable without permanent alteration.
