A Star Wars show became a film after strikes stalled its fourth season
The Mandalorian was meant to return as a fourth television season. Then the 2023 Hollywood labour disputes froze production, Lucasfilm rethought its plans, and the story of Din Djarin and Grogu went to cinemas instead, where it became the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars film so far.
Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni had scripts for a fourth season ready by February 2023. While the strikes halted work, Lucasfilm decided a feature film should come first. The project was announced in January 2024, with Favreau directing and sharing writing duties with Filoni and Noah Kloor. Pedro Pascal returned as Din Djarin, though stunt performers Brendan Wayne and Lateef Crowder also played the armoured bounty hunter on set.
Cameras rolled in California by August 2024 and wrapped that December, with long stretches captured in IMAX. Ludwig Göransson, who scored the series, came back for the music. The supporting cast mixed newcomers and surprises: Jeremy Allen White voices Rotta the Hutt, Sigourney Weaver joins the ensemble, and Martin Scorsese appears too.
Set after the Galactic Empire has fallen, the plot has Mando and his young apprentice working for the New Republic, tracking down imperial holdouts. Commander Ward sends him after a shadowy warlord called Coin. The Hutt Twins, heirs of the late Jabba, will reveal Coin's location if Mando rescues Jabba's son Rotta from the moon Shakari. The catch is that Rotta has become a celebrated pit fighter who does not want saving, and his captor Janu turns out to be Coin himself. Mando ends up breaking his deal with the Twins, which drags him and Grogu to the Hutt world of Nal Hutta.
The film premiered at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on May 14, 2026, and opened across the United States on May 22. Its worldwide takings of $345.8 million fell short of what Disney had hoped for. Reviewers were split: the score, the action and Pascal drew praise, while the plot, script and visual effects took most of the criticism.
