The versatile voice and face behind iconic Star Wars villains
In short: From the menacing Darth Maul to the secret apprentice Starkiller, Sam Witwer has become a defining presence in the Star Wars universe. Beyond voice acting, his ability to blend motion capture with live-action performance has made him a vital asset for major franchises and video games.
Sam Witwer, born on October 20, 1977, is an American actor whose career spans television, film, and video games. He has become particularly notable for his extensive work within the Star Wars franchise. This includes providing the voice and likeness for Galen Marek, also known as Starkiller, in the Force Unleashed video game series, and voicing the iconic character Darth Maul in various projects like The Clone Wars and the film Solo. His diverse filmography also includes roles in Smallville, Battlestar Galactica, and Dexter. Additionally, he has voiced characters such as the Son and Emperor Palpatine.
His versatility is further demonstrated through complex technical performances. In the video game Days Gone, Witwer provided both voice and motion capture for the protagonist, Deacon St. John. In a 2024 Star Trek concept video, he utilized 'digital prosthetic' technology to portray James T. Kirk, with William Shatner's facial features overlaid onto Witwer's own face. This required Witwer to adapt his acting style to match Shatner's specific presence and movement.
Witwer's journey to professional acting was non-linear. After attending Glenbrook South High School, where he was the lead singer of the band Love Plumber, he was accepted to the Juilliard School. However, he was expelled from the institution after two years due to his behavior. He eventually decided to pursue acting professionally after seeking advice from actor Bruce Campbell on the AOL website. He grew up in Glenbrook, Illinois, a suburb located near Chicago. During his youth, he spent much of his time playing music or engaging in Dungeons and Dragons.
