The White Lotus began as a lockdown show one hotel agreed to host
In 2020 HBO asked Mike White for something that could be shot inside a pandemic bubble. Australia's visa limits ruled it out, so he took over a Hawaiian Four Seasons for 13 weeks with barely a script. That gamble grew into an anthology with 16 Primetime Emmys.
White created, writes and directs the series, which premiered on HBO on July 11, 2021. Each season spends one week with guests and employees at a different branch of the fictional White Lotus luxury hotel chain, and each opens on an unidentified body before circling back to explain it. Hawaii came first, then Sicily, then Thailand, with a fourth season planned for Saint-Tropez. White calls the format his dream job, since he can burn everything down at the end of a season and start fresh.
HBO greenlit the project in October 2020 as a one-off miniseries and turned it into an anthology in August 2021. Its second run aired from October to December 2022; the third, held back by the 2023 Writers Guild strike, ran from February 16 to April 6, 2025. White did not want to commute to a San Fernando Valley soundstage again, as he had on Enlightened. Work visas for Australia in 2020 lasted at most eight weeks, too short for a full season, and Four Seasons was the only Hawaiian operator willing to hand over a resort, preferring some income to sitting closed.
Money was tight at the start, and the casting rules that followed stuck. Every regular is paid the same scale rate, reportedly about $40,000 per episode by season three, and billed alphabetically. Everyone auditions, stars included, and there are no chemistry reads, so the ensemble first meets on location. Only three actors have crossed seasons: Jennifer Coolidge as Tanya McQuoid, Natasha Rothwell as Belinda Lindsey and Jon Gries as Greg Hunt.
Critics praise the writing, humour and performances. Beyond its Emmys, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, it has two Golden Globes. Coolidge took two Emmys and a Globe for her role, Murray Bartlett won an Emmy for season one, and White himself won three for writing, directing and producing.
