One emergency room, one twelve-hour shift, a whole season in real time
The Pitt tells each season as a single shift in a Pittsburgh emergency department, with every episode covering about one hour. The format reunited three veterans of ER, won praise from doctors for its accuracy, and collected eleven Primetime Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series twice.
R. Scott Gemmill created the series, with John Wells and Noah Wyle as executive producers. The trio had worked together before on ER, which ran from 1994 to 2009. Their new show is set in the emergency department of the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, nicknamed the Pitt, where staff cope with too few colleagues, too little money and their own private troubles.
Wyle plays Dr. Michael Robinavitch, known as Robby, a senior attending physician who cares deeply about his team but is still carrying trauma from the COVID-19 pandemic. The first season falls on the fourth anniversary of his mentor's death in that same department during the pandemic, as four trainee doctors arrive for their first shift. Around him are characters such as Dana Evans, the tough but kind day-shift charge nurse played by Katherine LaNasa, and Dr. Frank Langdon, a sharp senior resident whose theft of hospital medication to feed an addiction gets him sent home late in the season.
Season two jumps ten months forward to the 4th of July. A burnt-out Robby is preparing for a three-month sabbatical and meets the doctor who will cover for him, while Langdon comes back after rehab and new medical students and a freshly qualified nurse join the floor. The show also makes the ladder of hospital seniority part of its drama, from attending physician down through senior and junior residents and interns to medical students.
The series launched on Max, since renamed HBO Max, on January 9, 2025. A second season was ordered that February and premiered on January 8, 2026; a third was confirmed just before it aired. Beyond the Emmys, including two acting wins for Wyle and one for LaNasa, it took Best Television Series in the drama category at the 83rd Golden Globes, and the American Film Institute named it among the ten best programmes of 2025.
