How an Indian screen legend redefined the action hero by shattering gender norms
In short: Vijaya Shanthi, known as the Lady Amitabh, dominated Telugu cinema for decades by refusing to play second fiddle. She commanded salaries equal to her male co-stars, performed her own dangerous stunts, and became the only actress to hold the record for the most industry-defining hits in the history of Telugu film.
Born in 1966, Vijaya Shanthi entered the film industry at age 14. While she began with conventional character roles, she quickly pivoted to woman-centric narratives that challenged the status quo. Her breakthrough came with the 1990 film Karthavyam, where she portrayed a tough police officer. Produced on a budget of 90 lakh rupees, the film grossed over 7 crores in southern territories alone. Her performance was so impactful that it inspired a young viewer to pursue the civil services, eventually leading to a career in the UPSC.
Shanthi’s career was defined by a refusal to rely on stunt doubles, even when performing risky feats from heights of 30 feet. This physical intensity, combined with her ability to balance aggression and femininity, earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress. By the 1990s, she was the highest-paid heroine in India, with remuneration matching industry titans like Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan. She successfully transitioned from glamorous roles to becoming a box-office 'hero' in her own right, answering critics who questioned how a woman could command such status.
Beyond her cinematic achievements, Shanthi has navigated a complex political career since 1998. She has served as a Member of Parliament and played a significant role in the movement for a separate Telangana state. Her political journey has seen her move between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Indian National Congress multiple times. Most recently, she was elected as a Member of the Telangana Legislative Council in March 2025, continuing a life of public influence that mirrors the bold, uncompromising characters she once brought to the screen.
