From child star to South Indian cinema icon: the versatile career of Geetha
In short: Geetha debuted as a seventh-grade student in the 1978 film Bairavi, eventually starring in over 200 movies across six languages. Her career spans decades of evolution, from playing landmark revolutionary heroines in the 1980s to transitioning into pivotal character roles after a brief hiatus in the early 2000s.
Geetha's entry into the film industry was unconventional, beginning with her role as Rajinikanth's sister in the 1978 Tamil film Bairavi while she was still in the seventh grade. She soon left her formal education behind to pursue a full-time acting career. Her breakthrough in Malayalam cinema came with the 1986 film Panchagni, where she portrayed the character Indira, a role based on the life of Naxalite revolutionary Ajitha. This performance was widely celebrated, with The Hindu labeling her one of the most significant heroines in the history of Malayalam cinema.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Geetha became a prolific presence in South Indian film industries, particularly in Kannada and Malayalam cinema. She frequently collaborated with legendary actors such as Mammootty, Mohanlal, and Rajkumar. Her work in Kannada cinema was particularly notable for her successful romantic pairing with Ambareesh, with whom she appeared in over fifteen films. Her versatility was further demonstrated by her ability to move between major commercial hits and critically acclaimed projects, earning her multiple accolades including Filmfare Awards South and various state-level honors in Kerala and Karnataka.
Following her 1997 marriage to Vasan Thatham, a business advisor and accountant, Geetha stepped away from the screen between 1998 and 2002. Upon her return in 2003, she successfully pivoted to character-driven roles, often portraying the mother of the protagonist in major films like Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana and Sivakasi. Beyond the silver screen, she has also maintained a presence in television, appearing in serials directed by K. Balachander. Now based in Chennai, her career remains a testament to the longevity and adaptability required to thrive in the competitive landscape of Indian cinema.
