The secret anagram hidden within a French animation giant
In short: Xilam Animation is a powerhouse of global children's entertainment, but its very name holds a private romantic secret. Beyond the hits like Oggy and the Cockroaches lies a linguistic puzzle designed by its founder to bridge the gap between a personal declaration of love and ancient Greek and Latin philosophy.
The studio's identity is rooted in a personal gesture from founder Marc du Pontavice. The name Xilam is actually an anagram of 'M-Alix', a declaration of love to his wife, Alix de Maistre. However, the name also carries a deeper, 'edifying' philosophical weight. It is constructed from two syllables: 'xi', derived from the Greek name for the letter X—traditionally a symbol of transgression—and 'lam', which references the soul, originating from the Latin word 'anima'.
Xilam's corporate trajectory is a study in strategic acquisition and industrial evolution. In 1999, du Pontavice founded the studio as a replacement for Gaumont Multimédia's animation division. Shortly after, Gaumont sold the assets of that division to him for 44 million francs. By January 2000, Xilam partnered with Igel Media to acquire a massive 200-episode animation library, providing the foundation for their international expansion into series like Space Goofs and Oggy and the Cockroaches.
The studio has navigated significant shifts in production logistics and global trade. While they previously utilized animation services in South Korea, the high costs led them to pivot in the 2010s toward studios in Vietnam and the Philippines. In 2008, they acquired the Armada animation studio in Vietnam, which was recently renamed Xilam Vietnam in September 2026 to better align with the parent company's brand identity and production goals.
Today, Xilam operates as a multi-faceted media entity with a presence in France, Vietnam, and the Philippines. They have expanded their reach through the 2025 launch of Toon Box, a subscription-based streaming app featuring over 1,000 pieces of content. This move signifies a transition from traditional broadcasting to a direct-to-consumer model, offering a curated, ad-free experience for children aged 3-10 across 11 international territories.
