A bus driver's son from Karnataka became the face of Kannada cinema
Naveen Kumar left home at 16 with his parents' warning that failure meant no coming back. As Yash, he worked through theatre and television, refused film offers without seeing scripts, and ended up leading KGF: Chapter 2, the biggest-earning Kannada film ever released worldwide.
He was born on 8 January 1986 in Boovanahalli, a village in Hassan district, and grew up with two names. Officially he was Naveen; his mother's relatives called him Yashwanth, a choice guided by astrology, which suggested his name should begin with the Kannada syllable ya. When industry advisers urged a stage name, he trimmed Yashwanth to Yash to sound distinctive. His father, Arun Kumar, drove buses for Karnataka's state transport corporation and later for Bangalore's city service, and the family also kept a small provision shop where the boy helped.
School in Mysore was a stage for dance and drama contests. After grade 10 he wanted to drop out and act, but his parents insisted he finish, and his father hoped he would join the civil service. In 2003 they let him go to Bangalore as an assistant director. He became a backup actor in theatre, played Balarama as lead in a 2004 play, and debuted on television that year in Uttarayana. In the 2005 serial Nanda Gokula he acted opposite Radhika Pandit, now his wife.
Seven early film offers slipped away because producers took his demand to read the script first as arrogance. His screen debut came in a supporting part in Jambada Hudugi in 2007. A lucky break followed: director Shashank's first pick for Moggina Manasu broke a leg, so Shashank cast Yash after spotting him on television, and the part won a Filmfare supporting actor award. His first lead, Rocky, flopped. Modalasala in 2010 was his first solo hit, and Googly in 2013, for which he adopted a younger look, put him among the industry's top names.
Prashanth Neel's KGF films carried him across India. The first part brought a Filmfare best actor award in Kannada. Away from the screen he runs the Yasho Marga Foundation with his wife and endorses numerous brands.
