In short: In 1965, a track from Memphis achieved a feat that defied the logic of the music industry. It became the biggest song of the year despite never reaching the top spot on the weekly charts, blending Tex-Mex rhythms with the burgeoning British rock sound.

Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs first released the track in 1964 via the XL label, which MGM later bought in 1965, leading to three million sales and a No. hit. 2 on the American Hot 100 from June 5–12, 1965, it remained on the chart for 18 weeks as the initial US track to reach a million sales during the British Invasion. The recording took place at Sam C. Phillips Recording Studio on Madison Avenue. This facility served as the successor to the original Sun Studio. The group's first major hit was produced during these sessions.

it earned the title of Billboard's top song of the year even though it never occupied No. 1 on a weekly Hot 100, marking the first time this happened on that chart, with RIAA gold certification granted on August 5, 1965. The track was held out of the top position by two other popular hits. One was by The Beach Boys and the other by The Supremes. It also reached the number two spot on the Canadian CHUM Charts.

derived from Big Bo & The Arrows' 1962 track "Hully Gully Now" and Junior Parker's "Feelin' Good", it depicts "Mattie" and "Hattie" discussing a "Wooly Bully" (an American bison) with the warning "Let's not be L-7" signifying "Let's not be square" The lyrics were famously difficult to decipher, which led some radio stations to ban the record. The production features a tenor saxophone solo and a simple organ riff. The bilingual countdown was actually an unplanned improvisation by the songwriter.

The 2009 Grammy Hall of Fame induction featured the track with its bilingual rhythmic counts, while the NHL's Utah Mammoth will adopt it as a victory anthem for the 2025–26 season. The team chose the first of three different takes for the final release. The song was originally included on a 1965 album of the same name.
