The 24-point landslide that broke a decade of Republican dominance in Ohio
In short: In 2006, Ohio was a political bellwether, a crucial swing state with 20 electoral votes. While the nation watched, a massive political shift occurred, as Democrat Ted Strickland secured a decisive victory, ending sixteen years of Republican control over the governor's mansion.
The 2006 gubernatorial election was far more than a local contest; it was a high-stakes battle for the soul of a swing state. The Republican incumbent, Bob Taft, was barred from seeking re-election due to term limits. His party faced a period of intense scrutiny following several scandals, including Taft's own 2005 conviction for four misdemeanor ethics violations involving illegal gifts. Additionally, the disappearance of millions of dollars from the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation fund—linked to investor Thomas Noe—had cast a shadow over the state's political landscape.
The race pitted Republican Secretary of State Ken Blackwell against Democrat Ted Strickland. Blackwell's candidacy was historically significant as the first time an African American had been a major party nominee for governor in Ohio, yet he struggled to maintain his base, receiving only 20% of the African-American vote. His tenure as Secretary of State was also under fire due to decisions in the 2004 election that critics argued suppressed voter turnout.
The results were a landslide. Strickland captured over 60% of the vote, a 24-point margin of victory. His strength was widespread, spanning the Rust Belt from Cleveland to Toledo and including the Akron-Youngstown area. He also won 16 of 18 congressional districts, including nine held by Republicans. While Blackwell held onto the Cincinnati suburbs and parts of western Ohio, the Democratic surge was undeniable, marking the last time a Democrat has won the Ohio governorship.
