The 2006 Missouri Senate race that shifted the balance of power
In short: In 2006, Missouri was a critical battleground for control of the U.S. Senate. Democrats needed six specific seats to seize a 51-seat majority, and Missouri was one of four states won by George W. Bush that they had to flip. The result would decide the political trajectory of the chamber.
The race pitted incumbent Republican Jim Talent against Democratic State Auditor Claire McCaskill. The contest was highly volatile, following a period where the seat had changed hands twice in just six years. In 2000, Democrat Mel Carnahan won a narrow victory over John Ashcroft before dying in a plane crash, leading to his widow, Jean Carnahan, being appointed to the seat. In 2002, Talent won a special election against Jean Carnahan by a razor-thin margin of 50% to 49%.
McCaskill entered the race with high name recognition from her successful campaigns as state auditor and her 2004 gubernatorial run, where she lost with 48% of the vote. Despite starting with a significant financial disadvantage, she leveraged high-profile endorsements, including a television commercial featuring actor Michael J. Fox. Fox's appearance, which addressed stem cell research, became a national headline after conservative host Rush Limbaugh claimed Fox was exaggerating his Parkinson's symptoms.
The election was shaped by significant political headwinds for Talent. He faced criticism for his shifting stance on stem cell research—having previously co-sponsored a bill to ban human cloning before withdrawing support in February 2006—and for his opposition to proposed state constitutional amendments on the issue. Polling showed Talent's positions often contradicted Missouri voters, with 66% favoring a minimum wage increase and 62% favoring tax increases to replace Medicaid funding cuts. Ultimately, McCaskill won with 50% of the vote to Talent's 47%, marking the last time an incumbent Republican senator lost in Missouri.
The victory was decisive for the Democratic Party's goal of reaching 51 seats. By winning Missouri, along with other key targets, Democrats were able to take control of the Senate chamber.
