Barcelona secured their 24th La Liga title in a historic three-way season finale
In short: The 2015–16 La Liga season culminated in a razor-thin margin between Spain's elite clubs. While Barcelona ultimately retained their crown, the title race remained undecided until the final matchday, featuring a dominant scoring performance that broke a seven-year streak held by two of football's most famous names.
The 2015–16 campaign marked the 85th season of La Liga, beginning on 21 August 2015 and concluding on 15 May 2016. The competition was defined by an intense three-way contest between Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atlético Madrid. Barcelona successfully defended their title, finishing with 91 points, while Real Madrid followed closely with 90 points after a late twelve-match winning streak. Atlético Madrid finished third with 88 points, falling out of contention only after a loss to Levante on the penultimate matchday.
Individual brilliance defined the season, most notably through Luis Suárez. By finishing as the league's top scorer, Suárez became the first player to claim the honor outside of Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo since the 2008–09 season. The season also saw significant movement at the bottom of the table. Levante was the first team to be relegated, followed by Getafe—which suffered its first-ever relegation from the top flight—and Rayo Vallecano. Conversely, Real Betis, Sporting Gijón, and Las Palmas earned promotion to the league.
The season was as much about off-pitch logistics as on-pitch performance. Broadcasting rights were segmented globally, with Telefónica holding exclusive rights in Spain and beIN Sports covering major regions including the United States, Canada, and the Middle East. The league also showcased unique branding initiatives, such as Deportivo featuring Chinese characters on their shorts and 14 teams adopting Sockatyes technology in their kits. The season concluded with Álvaro Medrán scoring the final goal during a match between Getafe and Real Betis.
