A razor-thin margin and a disputed Durham County vote tally
In short: The 2016 North Carolina gubernatorial election was one of the most competitive in the country. As election night unfolded, a massive block of votes from Durham County shifted the lead, sparking intense legal battles, allegations of fraud across 50 counties, and a high-stakes recount that lasted weeks.
On November 8, 2016, North Carolina voters headed to the polls for a race that would become a legal and political battleground. Democratic Attorney General Roy Cooper faced Republican incumbent Pat McCrory in an election that proved to be exceptionally close. As results arrived on election night, the outcome remained unclear; Cooper maintained a margin of less than 5,000 votes from a total exceeding 4.6 million, though this advantage shifted as various counties announced their counts.
The tension centered largely on Durham County. Shortly before midnight, McCrory held a 60,000-vote advantage until a block of 90,000 votes from Durham was added, placing Cooper back in the lead. The McCrory campaign raised concerns regarding the authenticity of these late-arriving votes, alleging they may have come from corrupted memory cards. This sparked a series of legal challenges and protests, with the McCrory campaign eventually filing complaints alleging voter fraud in over 50 counties.
The contest was historically significant for two reasons. It was the first time since 1976 that a sitting North Carolina governor was defeated while seeking a second term. Additionally, it was the only gubernatorial election in the state since 1896 where neither major party nominee secured more than 50% of the vote. Following a formal request for a statewide recount and a specific recount of Durham County votes, Pat McCrory conceded the race to Roy Cooper on December 5, 2016, after early results showed no change in the tally.
