In short: In January 2015, Ohio State and Oregon met in Arlington to decide the first champion of the new College Football Playoff. This inaugural title game replaced the long-standing Bowl Championship Series, setting a new standard for determining the best team in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision.

The 2015 College Football Playoff National Championship, held on January 12, 2015, at AT&T Stadium, marked a structural shift in American college sports. By replacing the Bowl Championship Series with a four-team bracket, the NCAA moved toward a more definitive selection process. The participants were chosen by a 13-member committee, with No. 4 Ohio State and No. 2 Oregon advancing after winning their respective semifinal games on January 1, 2015.

Ohio State secured a 42–20 victory, claiming their 8th national title despite losing the turnover battle 4–1—the highest turnover count for a winning team in a championship game. Ezekiel Elliott was a standout, scoring four touchdowns, while the Buckeyes outgained the Ducks 538 to 465 in total yards. The event was a massive commercial success, drawing approximately 33.4 million viewers and setting a cable television ratings record with an 18.5 Nielsen rating.

The aftermath of the game highlighted the volatility of college football programs. Ohio State’s victory sparked intense celebrations in Columbus, leading to 89 reported fires and police intervention. Conversely, Oregon struggled to maintain its momentum, eventually firing head coach Mark Helfrich in 2016. The game remains a pivotal moment in sports history, not only for the tactical performance of the teams but for the successful implementation of the playoff system that would eventually expand to a 12-team format by 2024.
