The 2016 New York and New Jersey bombings were a lone-wolf terrorist endeavor
In short: In September 2016, a series of explosive devices across New York and New Jersey left 33 people wounded. While initially investigated as separate incidents, authorities soon connected the attacks to a single suspect, Ahmad Khan Rahimi, whose radicalization path involved overseas travel and exposure to extremist propaganda.
The attacks began on September 17, 2016, with a pipe bomb explosion in Seaside Park, New Jersey, timed to coincide with a charity 5K race. Later that day, a pressure cooker bomb detonated in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood, causing extensive damage and injuring 31 people. A second device was discovered nearby but failed to explode. The following day, additional pipe bombs were found at a train station in Elizabeth, New Jersey, one of which detonated while police robots attempted to disarm it.
Investigators identified Ahmad Khan Rahimi, an Afghan-American living in Elizabeth, as the sole suspect. Rahimi was captured on September 19, 2016, following a shootout in Linden, New Jersey, that injured two officers. Although not part of a formal terrorist cell, Rahimi was motivated by extremist ideologies linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State. A notebook found in his possession contained references to figures like Anwar al-Awlaki and the Tsarnaev brothers, alongside declarations of intent to kill unbelievers.
Rahimi’s life was marked by personal instability, including failed relationships, legal issues, and domestic violence charges. His father had previously contacted the FBI in 2014 regarding his son's behavior, though the agency cleared him after the father recanted his initial concerns. Rahimi had traveled to Afghanistan and Pakistan multiple times, with reports suggesting these trips contributed to his radicalization. In 2018, he was sentenced to life in prison without parole for his crimes.
The investigation revealed that the bomb-maker had followed instructions from the al-Qaeda magazine Inspire. While the Chelsea bombing caused significant disruption and injuries, the lack of fatalities was notable. The case highlighted the challenges of identifying lone-actor threats, as Rahimi operated outside of established terrorist networks, sourcing materials independently and acting on personal grievances and extremist influences.
