In short: Entering the final day trailing by two points, the United States staged a massive rally at Royal Melbourne. Despite the International team's strong performance, six singles wins flipped the score, allowing the U.S. to retain the cup with a 16–14 victory in this 13th edition of the tournament.

The 2019 Presidents Cup, held from 12 to 15 December 2019 at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Victoria, was a high-stakes contest between the United States and the International team. The competition saw a significant shift in leadership and format; Tiger Woods served as the first playing captain for the U.S. since Hale Irwin in 1994, while Ernie Els captained the International side. This tournament also marked the first time the event was held without the participation of Phil Mickelson.

The International team's selection process had evolved from the 2017 edition. Instead of relying solely on the Official World Golf Ranking, they selected the eight players with the most points accumulated between 27 August 2018 and 18 August 2019. Both teams also saw an increase in captain's picks, which rose from two to four for this edition. The U.S. Automatic spots were awarded based on FedExCup totals accumulated between the 2017 and 2019 BMW Championships, doubling the 2018–19 season's value.

The tournament was defined by intense momentum shifts. The International team showed early dominance, winning their opening session 4–1—the largest lead ever held after an opening session. They entered the final day with a two-point advantage after recovering from the U.S. lead in several matches. However, the United States dominated the final day's singles matches, winning six and tying four. Notably, Tiger Woods remained undefeated throughout the competition, finishing with a 3–0–0 record.

The event also featured historic milestones for individual players. Abraham Ancer, Li Haotong, Joaquín Niemann, and Pan Cheng-tsung all made their debuts as the first players from Mexico, China, Chile, and Chinese Taipei to compete in the Presidents Cup, respectively.
