In 2020, the global film industry shifted its center of gravity toward East Asia
In short: The COVID-19 pandemic paralyzed Western cinemas, leading to the first year since 2007 without a billion-dollar blockbuster. As North American box office revenue hit a forty-year low, China emerged as the world's largest market, and Japanese anime shattered long-standing records to claim the top spot globally.
The pandemic fundamentally altered the theatrical landscape, forcing studios to postpone major releases or pivot to streaming. With North American theaters facing severe restrictions, the region generated only $2.3 billion in revenue, allowing China to surpass it as the world's leading box office market for the first time. This decline was so profound that 2020 became the first year since 2000 where no film managed to earn over $600 million during its theatrical run.
Amidst this disruption, East Asian cinema ascended. For the first time in history, six of the ten highest-grossing films globally were Chinese or Japanese productions. The Japanese anime Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train led this charge, becoming the first non-Hollywood film to top the annual global box office. It also broke records as the fastest film to reach ¥30 billion in Japan, outpacing the previous record-holder, Spirited Away, by a significant margin.
The industry also grappled with the future of distribution. A high-profile dispute erupted between AMC Theaters and Universal Pictures after the studio experimented with simultaneous premium video-on-demand releases for Trolls World Tour. By July 2020, the two parties reached a compromise, establishing a new 17-day exclusive theatrical window. This shift reflected a broader tension between traditional cinema experiences and the growing demand for digital access, a conflict accelerated by the unique pressures of the year.
